This summer, I will be working on the maintenance crew for Lake McDonald Lodge in Glacier National Park, and while money certainly factors into my decision to reside here, the seven hundred-plus miles of trails cutting through breathtaking scenery is what I am truly after.
I work and live near the park’s western entrance. Until the world famous Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully opened after the snow melts, I am confined to a small area of the park. Once it opens, I will be walking through massive valleys, scaling sheer mountainsides, and standing on precipitous ledges overlooking divine landscapes. I have already done several hikes during my first two weeks on the job, and they both consisted of somewhat demanding inclines to vantage points that overlook much of the park. Although spectacular in their own right, each provided a mere preview for what lies ahead this summer.
I encourage any of you to visit, for this place is as unique as it is special. Otherwise, I hope that this blog can provide a vicarious experience, one which we can discuss over a few beers someday soon. I will do my best to keep my site updated with the pictures, stories, and thoughts that I feel are worthy of your attention. I have already been lucky enough to see a mountain goat, as you can see in the photo below. I don’t wish to see any grizzlies, but stumbling across them on these trails is a very-likely-to-happen experience. Do not worry, I am not looking to shoot photos of them.
Thanks for reading.

You have tapped into something special Silas:” being”. You inspire me to live in the moment by your continuous presence in the now. You’ve tapped into something special my friend, I am glad to see you have found your existence is deeper and more meaningful than the egoic mind and external trappings. I hope I can join you one day.
